The #1 reason businesses stay on a bad host: migration fear. Done correctly, moving hosts causes zero downtime — your visitors never see a gap. Here's the proven sequence.
Phase 1: Prepare (keep old host running)
- Export all files (ZIP via cPanel or FTP download) and databases (phpMyAdmin export)
- Note DNS records you rely on (mail, verification TXT records)
- Lower DNS TTL to 300s a day before the move if you control it — speeds the cutover
Phase 2: Build on the new host (nothing public changes yet)
- Upload the file ZIP to the new site's file manager — on RoboHost it extracts automatically
- Import the database, update config credentials
- Run the optimization build and test on the preview URL — the optimized copy goes live on our servers before DNS ever moves
Phase 3: Cutover
- Switch nameservers (or A records) to the new host — propagation takes minutes to hours
- Keep the OLD hosting active 48 hours — both copies serve during propagation, so no visitor sees a gap
Phase 4: Verify, then retire
- Confirm SSL issued on the new host (auto-issues within an hour on RoboHost)
- Test forms, checkout, email delivery
- Submit the sitemap in Search Console, THEN cancel the old host
Total calendar time: ~24-48 hours, most of it hands-off DNS propagation. Downtime: zero.
