Core Web Vitals are Google's three user-experience metrics: LCP (loading), INP (interactivity), and CLS (visual stability). Fail them and rankings suffer; pass them and you're competing on content, not technical debt. Here's the 30-day playbook we use internally.
The Targets
Week 1: Baseline and Quick Wins
Measure first — PageSpeed Insights plus the CrUX report in Search Console. Then grab the quick wins: compress your hero image (LCP element on most pages), add width/height to every img tag (fixes most CLS), and enable compression. Typical gain: LCP -0.8s, CLS -0.15.
Week 2: Attack LCP Properly
LCP is almost always the hero image or a text block delayed by render-blocking resources. Fixes: convert images to WebP/AVIF, preload the LCP element, defer non-critical JavaScript, inline critical CSS, and cut server TTFB below 600ms (caching/CDN). On RoboHost the optimizer handles image conversion, defer, and critical-resource hints automatically on deploy.
Week 3: INP — Kill the Long Tasks
INP measures how fast the page responds when a user clicks. Culprits: heavy JS bundles, third-party tags, and main-thread-blocking tasks over 50ms. Audit with Chrome DevTools Performance panel; split bundles, defer analytics, remove dead scripts.
Week 4: CLS and Verification
Reserve space for images/ads/embeds (aspect-ratio CSS), avoid injecting content above the fold, and preload fonts with font-display: swap. Then re-measure: field data takes ~28 days to roll, but lab scores in Lighthouse confirm you're on track.
Why Platforms Beat Projects
CWV work is famously never "done" — every new page can regress it. That's the case for making it infrastructure: when optimization runs on every deploy, green scores become the default state rather than a project you repeat quarterly.
